There is no greater disruption to your small business cash flow or office harmony than the arrival or departure of staff!
This might sound like a dramatic statement but, the sooner small businesses realize this fact and put measures into place to counter it, the better off they will be.
As this disruption cannot be avoided, we thought we would share some of our tips to at least minimize its impact on your business:
- Before you even begin interviewing new staff make sure you have clearly defined what role they are going to be playing in your business.
- Prepare a proper job description as well as the qualities you are looking for in a staff member.
- Prepare a training programme, highlighting the most important tasks they need to learn within the first few days.
- Consult an HR specialist to ensure you have all the correct paperwork in place.
- Once you have employed your ideal candidate prepare for their arrival by:
- Setting up their work station
- Setting up their computer, email, etc.
- Outlining their training and reporting structure
- The moment a staff member gives you notice of their intention to leave we recommend you set aside time to review their work to ensure nothing “falls through the cracks” during their notice period.
- If possible, promote from within your business, as this not only shows confidence in your existing staff but ensures training is quicker and allows you to employ further down the salary scale where work disruptions are often minimal.
- If you haven’t followed the steps for hiring new staff as laid our above, we suggest you do so now as it applies to existing staff as well a new.
